In the south of the mainland of Greece located peninsula with around 21,000 km² (modern Morea); the name means "island of the Pelops" after a mythological figure. It is completely separated from the mainland by the artificial canal of Corinth, which was artificially created in 1893 and over six kilometers long. Here are the strongholds of ancient culture such as Epidaurus, Mistra, Mycenae, Olympia (the location of the ancient Olympic Games) and Sparta. The red grape variety comes from Greece, Synonyms are Aghiorghitico, Aghiorgitiko, Bacouri, Bakouri, Mavro Nemeas, Mavrostaphylo Mavraki, Mavroudi Nemeas, Mbacoura, Mbakoura, Mpakouri, Mpakouros, Nemeas Mavro and St. Georgs-Vine. The city of Nemea in the appellation of the same name was formerly called Agios Georgis (Saint George), which gave this variety its name. However, the grape variety name must not have the similar denomination of origin Agioritikos from the holy mountain Athos (Chalkidike peninsula) can be confused. The exact origin is suspected in the areas of Argolis and Corinthia in the Peloponnese. The parentage is unknown....
