Last reviewed: 10 December 2007
The DOC area in the Portuguese region Estremadura is named after the city of the same name. The area is characterized by 160 quintas (wineries) with often castle-like buildings (like the French Châteaux), whose roots go back to the Middle Ages. The red and white wines are made from the local varieties Arinto, Camarate, Fernão Pires, Jampal, Mortágua (Trincadeira Preta), Periquita (Castelão Francês), Preto Martinho, Tinta Miúda (Graciano) and Vital. The most famous wineries are Quinta de Abrigada, Quinta de Plátanos and Quinta do Carneiro.
