The name Valencia applies to the autonomous, Spanish Region in the Levant, one of the three provinces of this region (next to Alicante and Castellón de la Plana), for the capital (third largest city in Spain) of the province of Valencia and also for a DO area in the central east of the Iberian Peninsula. The port city of Valencia was already an important transshipment point for wine in Roman times. The Roman poet Juvenal (1st century) names a Sagunto wine in his satires.
