The named after the city of the same DO is located in the Spanish region of Murcia in the Levant, With 41.300 hectares of vineyards Jumilla is one of the largest DO areas. The vineyards are located at 400 to 800 meters above sea level. Because of the sandy soils with lime as the source rock, this area was spared by phylloxera in the 19th century. Mainly red wines from the main grape variety Monastrell (85% of the vineyard), Cencibel (Tempranillo), Garnacha (Grenache), Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are produced. The white wines are pressed from Airén, Macabeo and Merseguera. Traditionally, sweet wines are produced from overripe grapes by Pedro Ximénez or Monastrell....

The red grape variety comes from Spain. The approximately 100 Synonyms testify to the old age and the wide distribution.
