The famous company based in the city Jerez is the pioneer in Spain Brandy de Jerez (Brandy) and the famous dessert wine sherry par. The history of its origins dates back to the 1730s, when Patrick Murphy, who immigrated from Ireland, started to grow wine together with a Juan Haurie. After the death of Murphy in 1762, Haurie took over the winery, which already at that time the best sherry locations of Carrascal and Macharnudo belonged. Pedro Domecq Lebaye (+1839) was the nephew Hauries and inherited the estate in 1794 from his uncle. At the beginning of the 19th century, the partners Ruskin, Telford and Domecq shared ownership and management. Under this name, the company dominated the British sherry market and rose to the multi.
The company was renamed "Pedro Domecq" in 1816. After the death of Pedro Domecq, the company was taken over in 1839 by his brother Juan Pedro. When he died childless in 1869, he was succeeded by his (same name) adopted son Juan Pedro Domecq. A relative named Pedro Domecq Lustau then became a pioneer for the Brandy de Jerez and in 1874 launched the famous brand "Fundador" (the founder, in honor of Pedro Domecq). The activities then expanded overseas, so was in Mexico built a distillery and the brandy "Presidente" is one of the best selling spirits in the world.
In the 1980s, a merger with the sherry company took place Harvey's, which continues to distribute its products under this name. This was also the Portuguese port wine house Cockburn which was owned by Harvey's since 1962. The best-known and already legendary family member is the late Don José Ignacio Domecq, who died in 1997 and received the honorary title "sherry nose" for his special tasting skills. In Jerez, the size of the vineyards reached about 1,000 hectares. There are all sherry styles produced, the most famous are the Fino "La Ina" (the flagship), the Oloroso "Rio Viejo", the Amontillados "Botaina" and "Dule Venerable", the Cream "Celebration Cream" and the Palo Cortado "Sibarita".
As early as 1970, Domecq had a winery in the Rioja area founded, in consequence a whole group called in Spain originated Domecq Bodegas, By the year 1994, Domecq was a pure family estate, then by its sale the multi was created Allied Domecq but was still headed by Beltrán Domecq, a son of Don José Ignacio. For its part, Allied Domecq was smashed in March 2005 and the brands were taken over by various international companies (see there). See also below largest wine companies in the world,
