The winery is located in the west of the Spanish DO area Ribera del Duero, The name has nothing to do with Sicily, but is derived from the Holy Cecilia, the patron saint of church music. Vega means "fertile plain". It was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lacanda y Chaves. This had gained practical experience in Bordeaux and began near Valbuena on the banks of the Duero create a winery in the style of Médoc. He planted the brought from France grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but soon found that the local variety Tinta del País (a variety of Tempranillo) with appropriate care also brought excellent results. In 1915, the winery was taken over by the Herrero family and soon thereafter the first cuvée called "Unico" (unique) was produced for the first time. In 1982, the winery was bought by the family Alvárez Díaz, which also shares in the Hungarian winery Oremus has. The red wine Unico is now one of the best and most expensive in Spain. Only the best grapes are used for fermentation in wooden vats. The cuvée consists of the red varieties Tinta del País = Tempranillo variety (at least 80%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and a small proportion of the white Albillo. After also done in wooden tanks malolactic fermentation the wine rests for half a year. After a strict sensory quality test, only the best barrels are used as the basis for the further processing of the Unico.

In each new barrels made of French oak, which are made in their own cooperage itself, carried out the one to two-year barrique expansion. After that, the wine matures in old barrels of predominantly American oak at least five years and longer. Then the unfiltered wine is bottled and matured there for at least three years. At the earliest after eleven years he comes on the market and has an alcohol content up to 16% vol. Only in particularly good years is a "Unico Reserva Especial" produced, whose cuvée consists of two-thirds of Tinta del País, up to 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and the other varieties. It is blended from different vintages, for example there are cuvées from 1962 and 1979, as well as one from the years 1985, 1990 and 1991. This wine comes at the earliest after 14 to 15 years on the market and is considered "even better than the Unico ". Older vintages are among the most expensive wines in the world,

The second wine "Valbuena" fermented in steel tanks, the aging takes 11 to 14 months in already occupied barrels and then at least 18 months in the bottle. He comes "already" after five years on the market. In 1992, the nearby winery Alión was acquired. The approximately 50 hectares of vineyards are almost exclusively planted with Tinta del País. The red wine is similar to the "big brother" Unico and matures for 16 months in new French oak barrels. The company is a member of the renowned Family Winery Association PFV (Primum Familiae Vini).
