2001 Toscana IGT I SODI DI S. NICCOLO, Tuscany, Italy

Fairly mature nose, prominent spicy oak, partly preserved black and red berries, prominent herbaceous and light spicy notes. Firm on the palate, ripe dark fruit, loads of toasted oak, smoky and earthy notes, more dried herbs, some malt and sugar candy, fairly prominent, fine, slightly astringent tannins, full-bodied with noticeable alcohol, good persistence and depth, light acid bite, juicy and very firm on a very good finish with more noticeable alcohol. The oak is really unnecessary, but the wine is much better than we felt it was a few years ago.

Editor note: Lots of otasted oak on the nose, with red berries, cocktail cherries and some plums. Quite juicy fruit in the mouth, prominent oak, medium-fine tannins, only very slightly astringent, elegant acidity provides some life, chocolate on the palate, fairly creamy, not particularly deep, mineral notes, quite a cool style, attractive finish.
