The area covers 600 hectares of vineyards on gravelly and sandy soil on the left bank of the Dordogne, It applies to dry and sweet white wines from Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and Merlot Blanc, as well as for dry red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

The red grape variety comes from France, The name is probably from the French word for blackbird (Merle) derived, because these birds like to snack on the very ripe berries. The name can also be an allusion to the black-blue color of the berries similar to the bird. There are over 60 Synonyms, which testify to the worldwide distribution.
