The winery is on the road to Libourne in the area Saint-Emilion (Bordeaux). The estate has been owned by the noble Malet-Roquefort family for around 400 years, today it is managed by Comte Léo de Malet-Roquefort. The name derives from a medical center for leprosy patients located here in the Middle Ages, the old name for this disease was "Gaffets". During excavations in 1969, remains of a Roman building with mosaics depicting vines were found on the property. It is believed that this could be the place where the Roman poet Ausonius (310-395) lived and owned a vineyard. Whose home is usually the place of the Chateau Ausone attributed. The large property was divided in the 1860s. One part was that Château Canon-La-Gaffelière, the other part is the Chateau La Gaffelière-Naudes, whose name was only shortened to the current name Château La Gaffelière in 1964. It has been classified as "Premier Grand Cru Classé B" since 1955. By the way, the well-known oenologist Michel was the consultant Rolland (* 1947) active. The vineyards cover 22 hectares and are stocked with the varieties Merlot (65%), Cabernet Franc (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). The long-lived red wine is aged for 18 to 20 months in 50% new barriques. The second wine is called "Clos la Gaffelière".
