The appellation, named after the 1,912 meter high Mont Ventoux, is located in the southern section of the wine-growing region Rhone, Up to the 2008 vintage, the name was Côtes du Ventoux (the reason for the renaming is the more unambiguous identification for the consumer). The area was elevated to VDQS in 1951 and finally to AOC in 1973.
