The estate is located in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the district of the same name in the southern Rhône valley in Francel. It has been owned by the Avril family for the past 300 years. It is currently run by Paul Avril, who is assisted by his son Vincent. The vineyard area totals 32 hectares. This area is planted with the red varietes Grenache Noir (70%), Mourvèdre (20%), Counoise, Muscardin, Syrah and Vaccarèse, as well as with the white varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne. The red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced at extremely low, restricted yields of around 18 hl/ha. It needs six to ten years to develop, and has an extremely long maturation potential. Two French presidents, Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) and Georges Pompidou (1911-1974) included it in their list of favourite wines.
