The "Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez" based in Logroño in the Spanish area Rioja was founded in 1994. The native Basque Telmo Rodríguez spent his childhood at the Rioja winery Remelluri his father, studied biology in Bilbao, earned the oenology degree in Bordeaux and learned, among others, the legendary Bruno Prats on the Château Cos d'Estournel the high school of winemaking in practice. Then he had the vision to make the best possible wines in different regions of Spain at the same time. In 1994, together with his fellow student Pablo Eguzkiza, he launched perhaps the most ambitious project in recent Spanish winegrowing history.
Telmo Rodríguez is often referred to as the "Driving Winemaker" because he is constantly on the move to produce locally produced wines in various Spanish regions with his team of a dozen oenologists trained in Bordeaux in collaboration with local producers. It tries to put the regionally typical vines and characteristics of the individual wines in the foreground. Telmo Rodriguez was one of the first winegrowers in Spain who dealt intensively with the subject terroir employed.
The grapes each come from the best plots of predominantly very old vines and are gently aged in modern cellar facilities to so-called "Vinos con alma" (wines with soul). In 2002, the magazine "Revue du Vin de France" voted it almost euphoric for "Bordeaux en Espagne" and with spectacular reviews of the new wine superstar. So far, wines have been in the DO areas Alicante. Cigales. Malaga. Navarra. Ribera del Duero. Rioja. Rueda and Toro produced.
