The regional appellation in the eastern area of the middle Loire is named after the city and Episcopal Tours. It closes in the east of the area Anjou-Saumur on. Both the city and viticulture dates back to Roman times. According to a legend here was in the 4th century the pruning invented as the donkey of the later canonized Martin of Tours consumed young vine shoots. The name derives from the Gallic tribe of Turonen. The area was early called the garden of France and was in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the preferred residence of the French kings.
