The AOC area is an enclave within the appellation Anjou on the right bank of the Loire in the Maine-et-Loire department. The already from the Celts The eponymous community was founded by the Romans in 50 BC. BC after the soap herbs growing there called "Saponaria", from which the current name is derived.
