The appellation is located as an enclave within the area Coteaux du Layon in the winegrowing region Loire, The name is derived from the "best quarter" (Quart) around Chaume in the municipality of Rochefort-sur-Loire. In ancient times, the feudal lord retains the revenues of this quarter. The vineyards cover over 50 hectares of vineyards on steep slopes facing south on the right bank of the Layon, a tributary of the Loire.
