The winegrowing region is the northern part of the area Languedoc-Roussillon in the deep south France on the Mediterranean coast. It encompasses the three departments from north to southwest Gard. The red grape variety (breeding number INRA 1810-68) is a new breed between Cabernet Sauvignon x Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ). The crossing took place in 1961 France by the ampelographer Paul Truel (* 1924) on behalf of INRA, The variety was first grown in Marseillan (department Hérault, Languedoc), from which the name is derived.
