The appellation is located in the very west of the wine-growing region Languedoc in the department Aude (sometimes it becomes the region Southwest France attributed). The vineyards cover 1,800 hectares of vineyards at around 160 meters above sea level on a combination of light and stony clay and limestone soils. These extend on the southern slopes in the upper valley of the Aude over 41 municipalities with the main town Limoux next to Carcassonne.
