The appellation is at the top of the Loire in central France. It is named after the eponymous on a 150 meters the river towering hill small community (1,500 inhabitants) on the west bank. The area is known not only for its wines, but also for the soft cheese "Crottin de Chavignol" made from goat's milk. According to legend, the king, known as a wine lover, planted Henry IV (1553-1610) near Chavignol an oak tree, which was allegedly destroyed in a lightning strike in 1993.
