2001 Barolo DOCG La Villa, Piedmont, Italy

Firm, tobacco-like, smoky and woody-spicy scent of partly dried black berries with dried herbal aromas, liquorice, a little cloves and earthy-mineral notes. Also in the mouth quite firm, tangy-juicy fruit with spicy wooden notes, clearly soup herbs and some smoked bacon, fine, present tannin and a certain acid bite, persistent on the palate, strong and dense, salty minerality in the background, a little bitter chocolate, sooty, roasted notes, nutty tones, good depth, persistent, very good finish. Still very modern in style, but the origin is slowly but surely asserting itself; much more impressive than in his youth and still good for several years of maturation.

Editor note: Restrained nose in a modern style, slightly spicy, soft and warm nose with dark chocolate notes, moderate dried berry notes and some cinnamon. Harmonious in the mouth, sweetish soft preserved berry fruit, some plum purée, accompanied by light notes of chocolate and licorice, mature, tannins already quite well integrated, good finish. Uncompromisingly modern style, and quite successful at that.
