The wine region is in the northeast Hungary near the border with Slovakia, Tokaj-Hegyalja, the area of the Tokay, It has a 1,000-year history of viticulture. There was a brief interruption due to the almost 100-year-old Turkish occupation from 1596. Eger is named after the town of the same name (Erlau) at the foot of the Bükk Mountains.
