Largest wine region in Hungary in the Pannonian Plain (Alföld) in the south of the country with around half of the Hungarian vineyards. Until 1997 it was called Kiskunság. The vineyards cover 28,000 hectares on mainly sandy soils. After the catastrophic Phylloxera disaster Vines were planted here in the 19th century because of the pest sand does not tolerate. In addition, better stabilization of the soil was achieved than before by fruit trees. The climate is of hot summers with little rainfall and sometimes droughts, as well as from severe winters with harvest-endangering frost embossed.
