The wine region is in the northeast Hungary near the border with Slovakia, Tokaj-Hegyalja, the area of the Tokay, It has a 1,000-year history of viticulture. There was a brief interruption due to the almost 100-year-old Turkish occupation from 1596. Eger is named after the town of the same name (Erlau) at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. There are extensive cellar facilities under the city. The area is mainly known for the red wine Erlauer bull's blood (Egri Bikavér) became famous.
