Appellation in the two districts Korinthia and Argolida in the east of the Greek peninsula Peloponnese southwest of the port city of Corinth. Here was already in the antiquity practiced viticulture at least 2,500 years ago. The vineyards cover around 2,100 hectares of vineyards in 16 municipalities and are at an altitude of between 250 and 800 meters. The area is divided into numerous sub-areas, which due to the large height difference also have different floors. The best locations are those between 450 and 650 meters with red, deep ground. Based on the altitude, it is unofficially divided into three sub-areas.

Synonyms are Aghiorghitico, Aghiorgitiko, Bacouri, Bakouri, Mavro Nemeas, Mavrostaphylo Mavraki, Mavroudi Nemeas, Mbacoura, Mbakoura, Mpakouri, Mpakouros, Nemeas Mavro, St. George, St. George vine. The town of Nemea in the appellation of the same name used to be called Agios Georgis (Saint George), which gave the name to this variety. However, the name of the grape variety should not be confused with the similar name of origin Agioritikos from the Holy Mountain Athos (peninsula of Chalkidiki).
