The estate is located in the municipality of Torgiano in the Italian region Umbria. The history of the traditional family goes back 300 years. The business was taken over by the Umbrian wine legend Giorgio Lungarotti (1910-1999) in the early 1960s. In 1936 he had completed his agricultural studies with a thesis on modern viticulture techniques. In the 1970s, after extensive experiments, he put high Quality standards the foundation stone for the DOC classification of the area Torgiano. Today the company is run by his daughters Teresa Severini and Chiara Lungarotti. The possession of Lungarotti Società Agricola also includes that in the Tuscany Azienda Agricola Stomennano.
Various cultural activities are carried out in a foundation and two museums are operated, among other things. These are “Museo del Vino” (artifacts and information on 5,000 years of wine history) and “Museo dell'Olivo e dell'Olio” (olive cultivation). Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti is responsible for the management. There are two production companies (country estates). The Torgiano wine cellar was built in 1962 and expanded in the following decades. The Montefalco wine cellar was built in 2000 in the style of a country house. Festivities and weddings are organized on the ground floor. The wine is vinified in the cellar.
The vineyards cover 230 hectares in the municipality of Torgiano and 20 hectares in the municipality of Montefalco. It will be the red wine varieties Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colorino, Merlot, Pinot Nero ( Pinot Noir ) and Sagrantino, as well as with the white varieties Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano, Grechetto di Todi, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio ( Pinot gris ) cultivated. The vineyards in Montefalco have been managed according to the certified guidelines of the Organic viticulture (Organic). In the vineyards of Torgiano one sustainable Management according to certified rules operated by VIVA.
The large product range includes DOC wines Montefalco, Torgiano and Torgiano Vin Santo, DOCG wines Torgiano Rosso Riserva, Montefalco Sagrantino and Montefalco Sagrantino Passito such as IGT -Wines Umbria. The flagship of the house is the DOCG "Torgiano Rosso Riserva Rubesco Vigna Monticchio", which is made from 100% Sangiovese. After one year of fermentation and aging in wood (each 50% large wooden barrel and ) the wine matures in the bottle for another five years. Other premium wines are DOCG "Montefalco Sagrantino (100% Sagrantino; 12 months aging in barrels; 24 months in bottle), DOC Torgiano Bianco" Torre di Giano Vigna il Pino "(Vermentino, Trebbiano and Grechetto; 30% fermentation and aging in barriques and 70% fermentation and aging in stainless steel; 12 months in bottle). 2.3 million bottles of wine are produced annually. Around 45% are exported to 50 countries worldwide. Besides, too grappa, Olive oil and Balsamic produced.
