The wines keep constant high level and are usually the best in their respective category in the area. Weaknesses, there is little, but can occur in difficult vintages. However, this must be balanced in good years with particularly compelling assortments so that an operation can hold the status. In most cases you can blindly buy.

The "Weingut / Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries" is located in Gries near Bolzano in the Italian winegrowing area South-Tirol (Region Trentino-Alto Adige ). The origins of the present monastery date back to 1845 when Benedictine monks from the Swiss town of Muri in the canton of Aargau, the Augustinian Monastery in Gries, which had already been abolished at that time. In addition to the winery of Muri-Gries, the monastery also cultivates orchards, a mountain farm in Kampidell near Jenesien and a monastery nursery. The self-pressed wine served for a long time mainly to its own needs in the monastery. As a manager and oenologist Christian Werth is responsible.

Muri-Gries - monastery and vineyard with vineyards

From the early 1960s, wine was bottled for the first time. The vineyards cover 35 hectares of privately owned vineyard, from another 20 hectares of grapes are delivered by contracted farmers. The centerpiece is the monastery of Klosteranger, which was surrounded by old stone walls and was incorporated into the Austro-Hungarian cadastre in 1901. The soils consist of material washed ashore by the river Talfer on a substrate made of Bolzano quartz porphyry.

80% of the red wines Lagrein, Pinot Noir ( Pinot Noir ) Rosenmuskateller, Vernatsch ( Schiava Grossa ) and gray nonsense ( Schiava Grigia ), as well as 20% of the white varieties Pinot Blanc ( Pinot Blanc ) Pinot Gris. Chardonnay. Gewurztraminer. Sylvaner and sauvignon ( Sauvignon Blanc ) are cultivated and processed. The most important variety, Lagrein, is cultivated with 80%. For new plantings of Lagrein plants only biotypes from their own selection are used. The management is carried out by methods of close-to-nature, integrated viticulture with low stock load and gentle interventions on plant growth and the environment.

The wines are in the two lines Muri-Gries and Abbey Muri as DOC South Tyrol. Kalterersee. St. Magdalener and Terlaner Produced Pinot Blanc. They are fermented in steel tanks and, depending on the type of wine, they are aged in stainless steel, large oak barrels or barriques. The premium wines include Lagrein Riserva Abbey Muri, Kalterersee Auslese Classico (Vernatsch) and Terlano Pinot Blanc Riserva. All wines can be tasted and purchased in the monastery's own wine shop. The winery is a member of the association "Wineries South Tyrol".
