The port wine house based in postage (Suburb of Vila Nova de Gaia) in the Portuguese area Douro was founded in 1842 by Eduard Kebe. The Niepoort family, who immigrated from the Netherlands, joined in 1847 and took over the company after the owner's death. It is still the fifth generation in family ownership and is managed by Dirk van der Niepoort. During an internship at Moevenpick in Switzerland, he discovered his interest in top-quality wines. After one year of practice in the California winery Cuvaison, he joined the company in 1987 alongside his father Rolf. He bought Quinta de Napoles and Quinta du Carril. The vineyards cover 25 hectares of vineyards with the varieties Touriga Franca. Tinto Cao, Tinta Roriz ( Tempranillo ), Tinta Amarela ( Trincadeira Preta ), Gouveio ( Godello ) Rabigato. Viosinho and Sousão ( Vinhão ) are planted. A special feature is very old vines, some of which are over a hundred years old.
A red wine and a white wine are produced under the name "Redoma" autochthonous Varieties produced. The red wine "Batuta" is made from old vines and in expanded. The specialty are port wines, the house mainly by its Tawny got known. But all other variants such as Colheitas, Vintages and Late Bottled Vintages (LBV) are also produced. A rare specialty of the house are Garrafeiras (similar to an LBV) the first three to six years in traditional pipes (Wooden barrel) and then around 20 years in eleven liter glass balloons ( demijohn ) ripen before being bottled and marketed. Niepoort has been involved in the Quinta do Passadouro winery together with the Belgian entrepreneur Dieter Bohrmann since 1991. The vineyards cover 22 hectares. Among other things, a Single Quinta Vintage is produced here.
