The winery "Pago de los Capellanes SA" is located near the town of Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the DO Ribera del Duero
in the northern Spanish region Castile and Leon
, The property was given its name centuries ago when it was still owned by the Roman Catholic Church and was frequently visited by the chaplains of the municipality of Pedrosa. Since 1980, the finca is owned by the family Rodero Villa. The vineyards at 800 meters above sea level cover about 100 hectares of vineyards and are mainly planted with the varieties Tinto Fino (variety of Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The yield is limited to a maximum of 5,000 kg / ha, which is far below the official DO specifications. The wines produced in Bordeaux style are rather untypical for the region.
The flagship of the house is the 100% varietal from Tinto Fino pressed "Picón Capellanes" from a two-acre parcel. The malolactic fermentation takes place in large wooden barrels made of French oak. Then the wine matures for another 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Other premium wines are the 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon blended "Tinto Reserva" (18 months) and "Crianza" (12 months). A definite for quick enjoyment Joven
(Young wine) is blended from 80% Tinto Fino 80%, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot and matured in barriques for five months. The "Tinto Reserva 2003" was in 2006 at the competition Tempranillos al Mundo
in Cologne as overall winner with the highest price "Gran Oro" award.
