The DO (Catalan Empordà) is located in the outermost corner of northeast Spain on the Mediterranean coast in the region Catalonia and borders French Roussillon. The area is considered one of the cradles of Spanish viticulture. The vineyards with about 2,300 hectares of vineyards on calcareous soil are located at 200 meters above sea level, often in crater-shaped valleys (see Conca ).
