1999 Barbaresco DOCG Riserva Paje', Piedmont, Italy

Prominent floral notes on the nose, partly dried and partly preserved red berries and cherries, herbaceous aromas. Concentrated and fruity on the palate, spicy oak, loads of berry fruit, some more herbaceous notes, elegant, fairly prominent acidity, gripping, slightly sandy tannins, licorice in the background, some dried fruit, smoky notes, very good substance and persistence, still quite youthful, good long finish.

Best to drink: 2009-2012+. What our ratings mean

Editor note: Quite prominent floral notes on the nose, roasted and smoky notes, red berries and preserved light cherries, light notes of provencale herbs. Concentrated and quite juicy in the mouth, lots of ripe red fruit as well as some black fruit, some licorice, fine tannins with good presence, very persistent on the palate, has substance and depth, but is currently still a little closed, compact, delicate tart spice, good long finish.
