The winery is located in the municipality of Kaltern (Caldaro) in the Italian wine-growing area of South Tyrol ( Trentino-Alto Adige region). It was founded in 1968 and has been owned by the Roner family from Tramin since 1999. The administrator is Ludwig Kaneppele, and the cellar master in charge is Hannes Bernhard. Above the cellar buildings is the Ritterhof restaurant, where you can enjoy the wines of the winery as well as a large selection of other South Tyrolean wines and classic South Tyrolean dishes.
In addition to its own 7.5 hectares of vineyards, the Ritterhof also processes grapes from long-term contract winegrowers who cultivate a further 35 hectares. Most of the estate's own vineyards are located near the winery in Kaltern and Tramin, while the suppliers' vineyards are mainly located in the so-called Unterland region near Kurtatsch, Montan and Auer, as well as in the Bolzano valley floor. The white wine varieties Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Goldmuskateller and Gewürztraminer are processed to 40%, and the red wine varieties Lagrein, Vernatsch (Schiava Grossa), Rosenmuskateller, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to 60%. Great importance is attached to soil care. The vineyards are therefore cultivated in a natural, environmentally friendly way.
The white wines are matured in stainless steel, the red wines in steel tanks or in large wooden barrels. The diverse range comprises 30 wines, divided into the three selection lines Terra, Collis and Rarus. The down-to-earth Terra line forms the foundation and consists of the classic South Tyrolean wines. Varietal typicity and drinking pleasure are in the foreground here. The grapes for the wines of the "Collis" line come from the best slopes of the respective growing zones. In keeping with its name, the "Rarus" line consists of only two wines, the "Sonus" made from dried Traminer grapes and the Lagrein "Manus". Both are only produced in particularly good years. The large product range is marketed under the DOC designations Kalterersee, St. Magdalener and mainly Südtiroler. A total of around 290,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
