Blankenhornsberger Doktorgarten Spätburgunder VDP. Grosses Gewächs, 2012, Kaiserstuhl
MONDIAL DES PINOTS |
The winery is located in the municipality of Freiburg (Breisgau area) in the German wine-growing region of Baden. It was founded in 1997 as "Staatsweingut Freiburg & Blankenhornsberg Freiburg" and is affiliated to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Food and Rural Areas (a so-called wine-growing domain). However, its origins date back to 1842. The farm serves as an experimental estate for the scientists of the Freiburg Institute. The purpose of the estate is to further strengthen the competitiveness of the local wine industry through research and development and to help shape the future of viticulture. The estate building is located in the centre of the Blankenhornsberger Doktorgarten site. Bernhard Huber and Kolja Bitzenhofer are the managing directors, while Mr Isele and Mr Scheffelt are the cellar masters.
The vineyards cover a total of around 38 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Jesuitenschloss, Lorettoberg and Schlossberg (Freiburg), as well as Doktorgarten (Blankenhornsberg). The latter two sites are solely owned. They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Müller-Thurgau,Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gutedel (Chasselas), Bacchus, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Chardonnay, Muscat, Muskat-Ottonel, Silvaner and Scheurebe, as well as Pinot Noir. Organic viticulture is partly carried out according to ECOVIN guidelines. As a speciality, you can sponsor a vine. The wines are matured in the vaulted cellar, which was built in 1847, in large wooden barrels, barriques or stainless steel tanks, depending on the type of wine required. A bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter) and the ECOVIN organic association.
