The traditional winery is located in the municipality Gumpoldskirchen in the wine region Thermenregion (Lower Austria). It is one of the oldest winegrowers Austria, Shortly before his death Margrave Leopold IV. (1108-1141) - son of Leopold III. the saint - a gift. He presented the in solemn form Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz Abbey “for all time” the village of Thallern, which was then inhabited by fourteen families. The property consisted of six hooves (Huben), eight and a half vineyards and four farmsteads. The place name comes from the word valley (the estate lies in a gentle hollow).

From October 18, 1141 it was cultivated in a continuous sequence until 2009 by the monastic order. The vintner village was converted into a grangie (from lat. Grangium = storehouse) according to the spiritual prescription, that is to say a religious estate that was processed by lay brothers. The Saint John the Baptist was worshiped as the patron saint of the Grangien chapel, which was built in the main building. The Cistercian monks designed the winery on the model of the famous Clos de Vougeot in the French area Burgundy, The possessions in the Burgenland wine-growing region Lake Neusiedl The three wine-growing communities of Mönchhof, Podersdorf and Winden have been leased for a long time.
