The wines keep constant high level and are usually the best in their respective category in the area. Weaknesses, there is little, but can occur in difficult vintages. However, this must be balanced in good years with particularly compelling assortments so that an operation can hold the status. In most cases you can blindly buy.

The important port wine house in postage (Portugal) has emerged from various port wine companies throughout its history. The founder was the Scotsman Andrew James Symington (1863-1939), who immigrated in 1882. He started his career at the port wine company Warre’s (with Quinta da Cavadinha) and later became a partner in this company. At that time, George Warre owned the majority of the port wine company Dow's Port (with Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhorada Ribeira). In 1912, Symington acquired a stake in Dow's, while Warre bought back part of the family-owned company. The Symington family was responsible for production and the Warre family for sales and distribution. In 1961, Warre sold the remaining stake in the Symingtons, which now included 100% of Dow.

In 1970, W&J Graham’s (with Quinta dos Malvedos) was taken over as the third port company together with the sister company Smith Woodhouse . It continued with Gould Campbell and the last one with Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989. A partnership with Quinta de Roriz owned by João van Zeller, who is distantly related to the family, was resolved by mutual agreement in 2008. But there is no port wine brand called Symington, the products are produced under the names of the companies. Each of them has its own stocks.

The property includes around 20 quintas (wineries). The majority of the company has been at the since 1988 Madeira Wine Company involved, the largest manufacturer of Madeira, The second major partner is the Madeira company Blandy, The joint ownership of these two companies includes the brands Blandy, Cossart Gordon, Leacock and Miles. Most recently own export companies were founded in Great Britain and in the USA. DOC wines have been produced in the Douro area since 1999. Since 2000, the red wine "Chryseia" (grch. For gold) has been made from the indigenous varieties Touriga Nacional (80%), Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz ( Tempranillo ) and Tinto Cao blended and marketed under the "P + S" label (Prats and Symington). This is a joint creation with Bruno Prats, the former owner of Château Cos d'Estournel,

In the 1960s, the three cousins Ian, Michael and James Symington introduced new techniques. The "Symington Family Estates" group is now run by four Symingtons in leading functions in the fourth and fifth family generations. Senior director and head is Paul Symington. The company is a member of the prominent family wineries association PFV (Primum Familiae Vini).
