The winery is located nine kilometers away from the town of Merida (Badajoz province) in the DO Ribera del Guadiana
in the Spanish region Extremadura
, It was founded in 1999 by the de Alvear family. The vineyards cover 61 hectares, which are planted with the red varieties Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot, and the white varieties Pardina (Pardillo), Cayetana Blanca, Montúa and Viognier. For the most part, land wines are produced as VT Extremadura, the rest under the DO Ribera del Guadiana. The wines are bottled under the brand names Altara, Celtus, Equus, Miraculus, Torremayor and Viña Santa Marina.
