The DO in the Spanish region Madrid
with 11,800 hectares of vineyards forms a semicircle around the southern suburbs of Madrid and is divided into three subzones. San Martín de Valdeiglesias is located west of the city, Navalcarnero borders the Greater Madrid area in the southwest and Arganda is located southeast. The white wines are produced from Airén, Albillo, Malvar (Lairén), Parellada, Torrontés and Viura, the latter three only being approved in 1996. The red wines are mainly made from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and Garnacha (Grenache) as well as smaller quantities from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
