The wine-growing region (dt Slovenian Istria) in the winegrowing region Primorska in Slovenia extends along the Adriatic coast between the two municipalities of Koper and Piran. The vineyards cover 2,400 hectares of vineyards. Here dominates the red wine Refošk ( Terrano ), therefore the area is also called "Land of Refošk".

The red grape variety comes from France, The name is probably from the French word for blackbird (Merle) derived, because these birds like to snack on the very ripe berries. The name can also be an allusion to the black-blue color of the berries similar to the bird. There are over 60 Synonyms, which testify to the worldwide distribution.
