The growing area is in the country Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany and is named after the river of the same name. There are many surviving testimonies from the Romans who already grew wine here. The vineyards cover 4,237 hectares of vineyards along the river from Hunsrück to the mouth of the Rhine near Bingen. Near Bingen founded the Benedictine abbess Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) the Rupertsberg monastery. The floors consist of quartzite and slate on the lower Nahe, porphyry, melaphyr and colored sandstone on the middle Nahe as well as weathered floors, sandstone, loess and clay near Bad Kreuznach.
