The estate is located in the municipality of Vogtsburg-Oberrotweil (Kaiserstuhl area) in the German wine-growing region to bathe, The family's origins go back to the 15th century. The great-grandfather of the current owner Josef Bercher already bottled wine in 1900. In the 1950s, the Wiedemann and Bercher families jointly ran the Josef Bercher Erben winery. It was taken over by Beate Wiedemann-Schmidt and Franz Wilhelm Schmidt in 1985. Son Fabian Schmidt has been responsible for the expansion of the wines since 2007. The vineyards cover ten hectares of vineyards with a total of 52 scattered plots in the individual layers Feuerberg (Burkheim), Enselberg, Rosenkranz and stone Buck (Bischoffingen), and Henkenberg and Käsleberg (Oberrotweil). They are planted with the red varieties Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, as well as with the white varieties Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Auxerrois, Kerner, Gewürztraminer and Muscatel.

Quality criteria in the vineyard are healthy grapes without pest infestation due to extensive foliage work, as well as yield reduction through strict pruning and thin out, The healthiest and optimally ripe grapes are harvested through selective harvesting in several rounds. The wines are vinified separately according to locations or soils / microclimate in order to work out the different characters. The white wines are fermented without aroma yeasts and traditionally aged in steel tanks (no barriques). The red wines mature in large wooden barrels or partly in barriques. Since the 1999 vintage, wines from top locations have been marked with 3 stars. If the weather is suitable, ice wines are also pressed. Beate Wiedemann studied painting at the university in Freiburg. She designs artistic labels and regularly holds vernissages in the winery.
