The winery is located in the municipality of Neustadt-Duttweiler (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of
Pfalz. The origin lies in the farm estate in Duttweiler, which has belonged to the
Benedictine monastery of St. Lamprecht since 1290. After the dissolution of the monastery of St. Lambrecht, the monastery estate in Duttweiler was bequeathed to the University of
Heidelberg in the 16th century, which administered it for 200 years. In 1754, it was sold to the founder of the present estate, Jakob Bergdolt. Under Johannes Bergdolt (1801-1871), the vineyards were greatly expanded. Friedrich Bergdolt (1876-1962), one of the Palatinate pioneers in quality winegrowing, began bottling. From 1982, Rainer and Günther Bergdolt managed the estate, and since 2008, the ninth generation, Carolin Bergdolt, has continued the family legacy.
The vineyards cover 24 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites
Mandelberg,
Kalkberg and Kreuzberg (Duttweiler),
Mandelberg (Kirrweiler),
Eselshaut (Mußbach),
Mäushöhle (Deidesheim), as well as Nussbien and
Reiterpfad (Ruppertsberg). They are planted with the white wine varieties Pinot Blanc (8 ha), Riesling (7 ha), Silvaner, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and Gewürztraminer, as well as with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Dornfelder and St. Laurent. The aim is to produce authentic wines. Even during barrique ageing, care is taken to preserve the
typicality of origin and
variety. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The bottle label dates back to 1928 and has been changed only slightly since then. The winery is a member of the
VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) and the
German Barrique Forum
