The winery is located in the district of Heppingen in the district town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the German wine-growing region of Ahr. It was founded in 1920 by Peter-Josef Schäfer. Today it is run by his grandson Paul-Josef Schäfer and his wife Gitta, supported by their sons Paul-Michael, Heiko and Andreas. The vineyards cover 15 hectares in the Burggarten (Heimersheim), Schieferlay and Sonnenberg (Bad Neuenahr) and Ursulinengarten (Ahrweiler) sites. They are 70% planted with Pinot Noir, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Domina, Dornfelder, Frühburgunder, Merlot, Portugieser, Regent and Zweigelt, and the white wine varieties Riesling and Grauburgunder. In addition, there is a vineyard estate in the Goldtröpfchen site (Piesport) in the Moselle wine-growing region, from where Riesling wines are pressed. Natural viticulture with integrated plant protection is practised. Some of the wines are aged in classic barrels, while the best vintages are aged for up to three years in barriques. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, spirits (yeast brandy) and grape juice are also produced
