The estate is located in the Lorch commune in the German wine-growing region Rheingau, It was founded in 1826 to supply the “The Swan” hotel, run by the Altenkirch family. The German Emperor Wilhelm I (1797-1888) stayed there in 1878 and the winery subsequently became the purveyor to the imperial family. Franziska Breuer-Hadwiger is the owner and managing director, while Jasper Bruysten is responsible as cellar master.

The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vineyards with a total of 70 plots in the top locations of Lorcher Bodental-Steinberg, chapel hill. Crown and Schlossberg on gray slate, Taunus quartzite slate and slate weathering soils, which form the basis for the Altenkirch wines. They are mainly planted with Riesling, as well as some Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Consistent, close-to-nature management takes place with the goal of low yields.
