The family owned wine estate Hanewald-Schwerdt was founded in 1955 in Leistadt, a small village which belongs to Bad Dürkheim in Palatinate. The success of the estate is close connected to it´s unique style of wine grown on limestone. Today two cousins Thomas Hanewald and Stephan Schwerdt have taken over the running of the family buisness. Thomas and Stephan are members of ‘Generation Riesling’ which represents the modern face of german winemaking. Their focus is on dry wines, primarily made from Riesling and Pinot Noir that express their vintage and vineyard. The entry level wines aim to show off pure varietal character, while the village wines are all hand picked from individual soil types. The single vineyard wines demonstrate the highest levels of quality that each site and variety can produce.

The wines keep constant high level and are usually the best in their respective category in the area. Weaknesses, there is little, but can occur in difficult vintages. However, this must be balanced in good years with particularly compelling assortments so that an operation can hold the status. In most cases you can blindly buy.

The estate is located in the community of Bad Durkheim-Leistadt (area Mittelhaardt / German Wine Route) in the German wine-growing region palatinate, In the traditional family, winegrowing has been practiced for several generations. The bottle wine marketing started in 1955. A guest house is connected. Today, three generations work in a family group. The managers are Rudi Hanewald and Petra Schwerdt, as cellar master is Thomas Hanewald, responsible for the sale of Stephan Schwerdt and Barbara Hanewald, as well as for the external company Rudolf Schwerdt.

The vineyards cover 22.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Hochbenn (Bad-Dürkheim), paradise garden (Deidesheim) Reiterpfad (Ruppertsberg), as well as mornings and lime kiln (Leistadt). They are with the white varieties Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Goldmuskateller, Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner), Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Morio nutmeg, Kerner, Scheurebe, Huxelrebe and Ehrenfelser, and with the red varieties Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Dornfelder, Regent, St. Laurent, Lemberger ( Blaufränkisch ), Portuguese, Herold Vine and Acolon planted.

The philosophy of the house is: "Riesling is destination, great red wines a passion" . The quality pyramid is divided into three lines. These are vineyard wines (terroir-embossed wines from best locations, red vineyard wines according to criteria of the Barrique Forum Palatinate with a maximum of 4,000 l / ha yield), local wines (quality wines dry and predates with residual and sweetness) and estate wines (from own vineyards and classified grape varieties) , The flagship of the house is the red wine cuvée "Zweihänder" from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Bottle-fermented sects, secco (sparkling wines), grape juices and spirits (wine, grapes, yeast, pomace, fruit) are also produced. The winery is a member of the two associations Barrique Forum Palatinate and Generation Riesling.
