The winery is located in the municipality of Fellbach (Remstal-Stuttgart area) in the German wine-growing region of Württemberg. The traditional winery was founded in 1699 by Jakob Melchisedec Heid (*1664). Today it is run by Daniela and Markus Heid, the tenth generation of the Heid family. The 17th century vaulted cellar under the Trottenkammer (old wine press room) is used for cultural events and festivals. The vineyards cover eight hectares of vines in the Goldberg and Lämmler vineyards in Fellbach. They are planted with the red wine varieties Trollinger, Lemberger, Pinot Noir, Regent, Dornfelder, Samtrot, Syrah, Portugieser, St. Laurent, Cabernet Dorio, Cabernet Dorsa and Cabernet Mitos as well as the white wine varieties Riesling, Kerner, Rivaner and Sauvignon Blanc. Organic viticulture is practised according to ECOVIN rules. The PIWI varieties do not use chemical pesticides.

Red wines account for 70% of the production. The different wines, which come from relatively small plots, are vinified separately. The fruit character of the white, rosé and Trollinger wines is emphasised by gentle pressing, cool slow fermentation and long fine yeast storage. Depending on their potential, the red wines mature in stainless steel tanks or up to 24 months in oak barrels. They are divided into three categories, which is indicated on the labels by the symbol of one, two or, in the case of the particularly long-lived wines, three grapes. The flagship of the house is the red wine cuvée "M" (Melchisedec) named after the founder. The wine is blended from the Lemberger and Pinot Noir varieties and ages for 22 months in barriques. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).
