The German growing area Franconia used to be in the three main triangle areas, Mainviereck and Steigerwald with 23 large layers and 216 individual layers. In November 2011 a new regulation was decided by the members of the Franconian Wine Association. The three old areas will be replaced by 12 much smaller ones. It was created in 1916 by the German breeder Justus Georg Scheu (1879-1949) at the Landesanstalt für Rebenzüchtung in Alzey (Rheinhessen).
