The estate is located in the community Bischoffingen (area Kaiserstuhl) in the south of the German wine-growing region to bathe, It was founded in 1985 by Karl-Heinz Johner and his wife Irene. The aim was to produce Burgundy-style wines. The already in barrique developed wines could be marketed in the early years only as table wines. In the 1990s, the newly built in the style of a monastery in accordance with California models winery with a circular barrique barrel cellar was put into operation. Karl-Heinz Johner is assisted by his son Patrick, who studies in Geisenheim Practical experience gained in Burgundy (Hubert Lignier, Comte Lafon) and in Australia (Tim Knappstein). The vineyards cover 17 hectares of vineyards in seven districts. Outstanding single layers are Enselberg and stone Buck (Bischoffingen), as well as Eichberg (Oberrotweil). They are planted with the white varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Rivaner, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the red varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Dorio, Cabernet Cubin, Cabernet Mitos and Dakapo.

Important quality criteria are thin out (Green reading) for the purpose of yield reduction and Defoliation, The varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Rivaner are in principle expanded in stainless steel. The white wines, which have been vinified in burgundy style, are partly matured in 350-liter oak barrels and partly in stainless steel tanks in order to achieve a balance between fruit and wood. The tranches will be equalized afterwards. The red wines mature at least 15 months in barriques. The wines are produced in the three lines base wines (secondary label), normal wines and "SJ" (selection Johner). The latter come from the best plots of particularly old vines and are expanded in new oak barrels.

In 2001 was in New Zealand in Wairarapa the winery "Johner Estate" founded. The first wine was launched in 2002. The vineyards cover about 12 hectares of vineyards, with the varieties Pinot Noir (8 ha) and Sauvignon Blanc (3 ha), as well as small quantities Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Gewürztraminer, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec are planted.
