The estate is located in the municipality of Hattenheim (part of Eltville ) in the German growing area Rheingau, It was founded in 1953 by Johann Josef Lang. The company was founded in 2013 by the Swiss urban merchant (former owner of an Appenzeller cheese dairy and Eva Raps (former GF of the VDP ) acquired. Kaufmann is responsible oenologist and is supported by Eckart Waitz. Eva Raps is responsible for marketing and sales. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards in which individual locations classified as Grosse Lage (VDP) Hassel and Wisselbrunnen (Hattenheim), as well as in the First location (VDP) Rifle House (Hattenheim). You are with the white wines Riesling (80%), Pinot Blanc ( Pinot Blanc ), Pinot Gris ( Pinot gris ) Chardonnay and Sylvaner, and Pinot Noir ( Pinot Noir ) planted. The complete changeover took place in 2009 Organic viticulture so that all wines from vintage 2012 onwards ecological Guidelines are certified.
After the presentation of the first three wines of the 2014 vintage, a complete wine line called "Kaufmann" was launched with the 2015 vintage. Both the Rieslings, the white Burgundy varieties and the Pinot Noir will be marketed with the new equipment in the future. The clear and precise character of the controlled, ecologically produced wines should reflect their Rheingau origin and bring the winery back to the top quality of the VDP Rheingau. The striking red design refers to the Swiss origin of Urban Kaufmann, as does the name of the branded wine "Tell", a high-quality Riesling blend from the best locations of the winery. The annual production of wine and sparkling wine comprises around 140,000 bottles of wine. The winery is a member of VDP (Association of German quality wine estates).
