The estate is located in the municipality Hattenheim (part of Eltville ) in the German wine-growing region Rheingau, It was founded in 1953 by Johann Josef Lang. The company was founded in 2013 by the Swiss Urban Kaufmann (former owner of an Appenzell cheese dairy and Eva Raps (former GF of the VDP ) acquired. Businessman is responsible oenologist and is supported by Eckart Waitz. Eva Raps is responsible for marketing and sales. The vineyards cover 20 hectares of vineyards in which as Large Location (VDP) classified individual layers Hassel and Wisselbrunnen (Hattenheim), as well as in the First location (VDP) Schützenhaus (Hattenheim). They are with the white wine varieties Riesling (80%), Pinot Blanc ( Pinot Blanc ), Pinot Gris ( Pinot gris ) Chardonnay and Sylvaner, as well as Pinot Noir ( Pinot Noir ) planted. In 2009, the complete conversion to Organic viticulture so all wines from vintage 2012 onwards ecological Directives are certified.
After the presentation of the first three wines of the vintage 2014, a complete wine line named "Kaufmann" was started with the 2015 vintage. The clear and precise character of the controlled organic wines should reflect their Rheingau origin and bring the winery back to the top quality of the VDP Rheingau. The striking red features refer to the Swiss origin of Urban Kaufmann, as well as the name of the brand wine "Tell", a high-quality Riesling cuvée from the best vineyard locations. The annual production of wine and sparkling wine comprises around 140,000 bottles of wine. The winery is a member of VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
