One of the five specific wine regions in the Austrian state or generic wine-growing region Burgenland, In 2016, a restructuring took place, with changes in names and territorial boundaries. The former name of southern Burgenland was replaced by Eisenberg. The new name was chosen because the "ü" could interfere with the export and "Eisenberg" was also once the name of the traditional wine-growing region. From the 12th century, the Catholic monastic order of the Cistercian much contributed to the development of viticulture.
