2002 Hochheim Hölle Riesling Auslese trocken Goldkapsel, Rheingau, Germany

Editor note: Deep, intense, complex nose, very ripe stone fruit and pomaceous fruit as well as dried citrus fruit, some leeks, and very prominent tart mineral notes. Elegant and creamy on the palate, concentrated and juicy, loads of ripe fruit, tremendous mineral foundation, very elegant acidity, both harmonious and gripping, concentrated and persistent, very full-bodied and has tremendous structure, with relatively moderate alcohol levels, very, very deep and complex, excellent balance, fantastic length, such as one rarely sees in a dry white wine. Appears to be opening up again at this stage.

Best to drink: 2008-2025.
Editor note: Extremely concentrated on the nose, overwhelming, absolutely pure peach aromas, candied and fresh citrus fruit, racy, gripping mineral notes, almost too much for the senses, extremely elegant herbaceous notes. Overwhelming fruit on the palate, at a level I have never before seen in a Rheingau wine, extremely concentrated but not at all heavy, although it has a truly mighty body, mineral foundation on which you could build a skyscraper, residual sugar just noticeable, creamy texture, just keeps on going, whatever it shows on the palate pales before the finish: I have never yet experienced such a complex, fascinating, never-ending finish full of character on a dry Riesling. There is nothing to beat the tremendous mineral structure, which is almost brutal and uncompromising, but this is balanced by an incredible amount of the finest fruit imaginable. I can only weep on my keyboard. Needs years to mature.
