The winery is located in the municipality Dernau in the German wine-growing region Ahr
, Attached is the Gutsschenke "Hofgarten", which has been in family ownership for 200 years. The current owner Werner Näkel studied sports and mathematics. In 1982, he took over the family business and viticulture initially only as a sideline. This was expanded from then two hectares to the present extent. He began experimenting with long maceration periods and barrique aging. From the end of the 1980s, Werner Näkel, who was described as a "red wine magician" as an innovative winemaker, was decisively involved in today's high quality level at the Ahr. In 1989, the first of many red wine prices was won. He presented his extensive knowledge as Flying Winemaker
in Portugal, South Africa and Gran Canaria and available.
Together with Neil Ellis
was founded in 1996 in the South African wine region Stellenbosch near Cape Town, the winery "Zwalu" (German "new beginning"). Together with Bernd Philippi (owner of the winery Koehler-Ruprecht
in the Palatinate) and Bernhard Breuer
(Owner of the winery in the Rheingau), with whom he had previously worked in some projects, founded Werner Näkel in 2000 in the Portuguese Douro Valley, the winery "Quinta da Carvalhosa".
The Ahr vineyards cover 13 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Kräuterberg
(Dernau), as well Sonnenberg
(Bad Neuenahr). They are planted with the varieties Pinot Noir (10 ha), Frühburgunder, Dornfelder and Riesling. Among the top wines are the cuvées "Blauschiefer" and "S" matured in oak barrels, as well as the dry readings from the Pfarrwingert and the Kräuterberg, all of which are bottled only in September of the following year. A special feature is the light-colored "illusion" from Pinot Noir. It also distilled spirits. The winery is a member of VDP
(Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter).
