1999 Dernau Pfarrwingert Frühburgunder Auslese trocken, Ahr, Germany

Matt garnet to ruby red, lighter at the rim. Smoky aroma, spicy wood, red and black berries, with hints of tobacco and minerals. Very full body, powerful, juicy fruit with intense smoky and toasted wood components, finely-grained tannin, slightly rustic touch, noticeable alcohol, tobacco notes repeated on palate, light mineral touch, persistent, smoky finish. Gives the impression of being closed, and is currently overwhelmed by wood.
